KOFFEE’S DEBUT EP ‘RAPTURE’ TOPS BILLBOARD REGGAE CHART

Koffee is the youngest artist from Jamaica to top the Billboard Reggae chart.

At the age of 19, she made history when her debut EP, “Rapture,” entered the number-one spot on the coveted chart, last week.

Koffee’s Rapture has also taken the top ranking on iTunes Reggae Chart, a place that reggae legend Bob Marley has held, off and on, for a long time, according to Jamaicans.com. Rapture sold 444 copies in the first week of release to earn her the top spot on the chart.

“Rapture” has five tracks, three of which were pre-released “Raggamuffin,” “Toast,” and “Throne” along with her newly released “Blazin,” featuring Jane MacGizmo, and the title track, “Rapture.”Stream Koffee EP Rapture

Koffee described the feat as being ‘amazing’, and said that she is grateful for the support she has been receiving over the past few months.

“I just have to give thanks! I’m happy everyone’s enjoying the music. To be recognised on an international level is just amazing,” she told the Jamaica STAR.

“Give thanks for the overwhelming support. I really didn’t expect it when I released the Rapture EP, but it’s good to know that all the hard work my team and I put in is being recognised – not just in Jamaica, but on an international level. It means the world is watching, and they are ready for that fresh new sound coming out of Jamaica.”

Koffee added that her accomplishment will also open doors for other young artists who are knocking at the industry’s door and waiting patiently for their big break.

“It means a lot, not just for my career, but for other young, up-and-coming Jamaican artistes like myself. The music is being put on the map again, and it’s a gateway for similar acts to be recognised by not just the local industry, but the international one as well.”

Koffee has expressed her EP as a “kind of fresh and new vibe,” and she noted that she was excited about its release as this was her first chance to present herself to the world on an extended play.

Her breakout single “Toast” has been one of the hottest Reggae singles on the airwaves for the past several weeks with over 20 million views on YouTube.

Patra was the first reggae artist out of Jamaica to top the Billboard chart with her debut project, “Queen of The Pack,” which spent 15 weeks at number one. Diana King’s “Think Like A Girl” earned the top spot on the chart in 1997 for six weeks. It would be another seventeen years before another Reggae female artist top the Billboard chart as Etana’s “I Rise” took over the chart in 2018 for one week.

According to Billboard, Jamaica is currently experiencing a cultural renaissance, as a new wave of young talent is rushing in to take over reggae music. Koffee, a graduate of Ardenne High School, is leading the pack with her refreshing spin on the genre

The singer, born Mikayla Simpson, cites fellow modern reggae stars like Chronixx, Protoje, Lila Ike, Royal Blu and Runkus as inspirations. She first got a taste of the limelight when veteran artist Cocoa Tea brought her on stage at Rebel Salute last January.

“I was so nervous! But Cocoa just told me to remain focused,” Koffee told Billboard about performing at the historic festival held annually in Jamaica’s St. Ann parish.

“But when I returned this year [as a solo act], I was able to appreciate being on the stage by myself, having my own band and focusing on my set. Seeing everyone [in the crowd] get involved in the songs gave me such a good energy.” Source…Hype Life Magazine
